Tips for Maximizing Your Over-the-Phone Interpreting Appointment

Unlike in-person interpretation appointments, where individuals are in the same room allowing for social ques like body language and facial expressions to be noted and accounted for, over-the-phone interpreting doesn't afford that opportunity but it can still be an effective communication tool. View the tips below for more information on how to optimize your over-the-phone interpretation appointment.

  • Speak Slowly & Clearly
    During our typical interactions we often speak quite quickly. Slow down the pace at which you speak, allowing for greater enunciation to ensure clear communication for the interpreter.
  • Allow for Additional Time
    The time required will be longer than a typical conversation as everything is being communicated twice!. Ensure to book a longer window to reduce the pressure on all parties and ensure enough time for additional questions that may arise due to the language differences.
  • Visual Aids (Documents)
    If any visual aids are available, send them to your client and interpreter prior to your conversation.
  • Terminology
    Where possible, break down industry terms and avoid utilizing acronyms. In addition, if there is specific industry terminology that may be helpful for our interpreter to have ahead of time please let us know.
